Introducing AGORA: Empowering Regenerative and Sustainable Tourism

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Erasmus+ AGORA project, to be implemented in 36 months by nine (9) partners from France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, and Finland. This project is an exciting initiative aimed at supporting local ecosystems, promoting regenerative tourism, and fostering sustainability. AGORA brings together community partners, local producers, and tourism agents to co-design authentic and immersive tourism experiences that celebrate the unique identity of each community. The project is foreseen to have a positive impact on local communities, adult learners, tourism agents, and educators.

Context and Objectives: The world is evolving, and so are our aspirations for travel experiences. As travellers become more conscious of their impact on the environment and local cultures, the demand for sustainable and regenerative tourism practices is on the rise. The AGORA project comes at a crucial moment to address these demands by empowering local ecosystems and fostering a deep connection between tourists and the communities they visit.

Our primary objectives are clear: to enhance the capabilities of community learning centres and tourism ecosystem agents. Through this project, we aim to facilitate collaboration, knowledge exchange, and capacity building among stakeholders to create tourism experiences that promote authenticity, sustainability, and regeneration.

Participants and Activities: The AGORA project aspires to bring together a diverse group of participants, including community partners, local producers, tourism agents, adult learners, and educators. This collaborative approach ensures that all stakeholders have a voice in shaping the future of regenerative tourism in their communities.

What will the project be delivering?

  • Best Practices and Sustainability Guide: Learning from successful case studies conducted by the projects’ consortium, and identifying best practices is essential and most useful. Best practices collection and case studies will compile a sustainability guide to assist stakeholders in implementing regenerative practices within their communities.
  • Development and Organisation of Blended Training: Adult learners will be provided with a unique opportunity to improve their skills through a specially designed blended training program. This will equip them with the necessary competencies to contribute to regenerative tourism ecosystems.
  • Creation of Co-Design Spaces: AGORA’s consortium recognizes the importance of community involvement in shaping regenerative / sustainable tourism experiences. This deliverable will focus on establishing co-design spaces and community networks where stakeholders can collaborate to plan and execute community actions for regenerative tourism and community promotion.

Anticipated Results and Long-Term Benefits: Within the implementation framework of AGORA, we expect to witness significant positive changes in various aspects:

  • Local tourism ecosystems will become more regenerative, promoting sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities.
  • Adult learners will have increased access to lifelong learning opportunities that enhance their skills and employability prospects.
  • Tourism agents will be better equipped to meet the challenges posed by societal demands for sustainability, fostering a more responsible and conscious approach to tourism.
  • Adult educators will receive the necessary training to develop immersive experiences that serve as a key tool for regenerative tourism ecosystems.

Ultimately, the AGORA project aspires to lay the groundwork for a more sustainable and responsible tourism industry. By interconnecting stakeholders, nurturing local tourism ecosystems, and promoting regenerative practices, we aim to create a lasting positive impact on communities and travellers alike.
